What is Noisescape?

Noisescape is a free online tool that generates ambient sounds directly in your browser using the Web Audio API — a built-in synthesis engine that ships with every modern browser. There are no audio files, no server streams, and nothing to install. You open the page, click a sound, and it plays instantly.

The site offers ten synthesized sounds — white noise, brown noise, pink noise, rain, thunderstorm, ocean waves, forest, coffee shop, fireplace, and fan — plus a binaural beats generator, a sleep timer, a Pomodoro focus timer, and a focus mode that strips away everything except the controls. Every sound is generated mathematically in real time, meaning no loop seams, no compression artefacts, and infinite natural variation.

Why we built it

Most white noise apps require downloads, accounts, or subscriptions. When you need focus or sleep, the last thing you want is five minutes of friction. Noisescape solves this: open it, click a sound, it plays. No account. No payment. No upgrade prompt.

We also wanted the sounds to be genuinely good — not crackly, loopy, compressed audio files. By synthesizing every sound with the Web Audio API, we produce clean, continuous, artefact-free noise that's pleasant for hours of listening. Our ocean waves use wave-event scheduling. The forest has FM-synthesized bird calls. The coffee shop has seven independent conversation channels with realistic talk/pause timing.

Our values

🔓

Permanently free

Every feature has been free since day one and will stay that way. Focus and sleep tools should not be locked behind a subscription.

🔒

No data collection

No account, no tracking of individuals. We use Google Analytics for aggregate statistics only — not for profiling or selling data.

Zero friction

Page loads in under a second. Sounds start instantly. No onboarding, no prompts to sign up. Just the tool.

Who uses Noisescape?

Remote workers and students masking distractions, people with ADHD using brown noise for focus, light sleepers blocking environmental sound, parents soothing infants, tinnitus sufferers masking phantom sounds, and writers recreating the productive coffee shop environment — all from one free browser tab.
